1、 Basic Situation of the National Construction Industry in the First Half of 2023

(1) Value added situation of the construction industry

In the first half of 2023, the construction area of houses was 11.776 billion square meters, a year-on-year decrease of 2.46%. Among them, the newly constructed area was 1.769 billion square meters, a decrease of 10.28% compared to the same period last year. The completed area of the house is 1.426 billion square meters, a year-on-year decrease of 3.08%.

From the composition of the completed housing area of construction enterprises nationwide, residential housing accounts for the largest proportion of 61.52%; The completed area of factories and buildings accounts for 17.63%; The completed area of commercial and service buildings accounts for 6.62%; The completed area of other types of houses accounts for less than 5%.


(6) Foreign contracted projects

From January to June 2023, China's foreign contracted engineering business completed a turnover of 490.1 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7% (equivalent to 70.73 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 0.1%), and the newly signed contract amount was 655.98 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 2.3% (equivalent to 94.67 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 8.6%). The newly signed contract value of Chinese enterprises in the countries along the "the Belt and Road" is 330.1 billion yuan, down 2.5% year on year (equivalent to 47.64 billion dollars, down 8.8% year on year), accounting for 50.3% of the newly signed contract value of China's foreign contracted projects in the same period; The completed revenue was RMB 277.72 billion, a year-on-year increase of 11.5% (equivalent to USD 40.08 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4.4%), accounting for 56.7% of the total amount during the same period.

From January to June 2023, Chinese enterprises sent a total of 167000 laborers of various types overseas, an increase of 46000 compared to the same period last year; Among them, 52000 people were dispatched under the contracted engineering project and 115000 people were dispatched under the labor cooperation project. At the end of June, there were 560000 laborers of various types working abroad.


2、 Basic situation of the construction industry in various regions in the first half of 2023

(1) Completion status of total output value of the construction industry

In the first half of 2023, the total output value of the construction industry in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Guangdong all exceeded 1 trillion yuan, reaching 1591.678 billion yuan, 1137.578 billion yuan, and 1058.619 billion yuan, respectively, accounting for 12.03%, 8.61%, and 8.00% of the total output value of the national construction industry. In addition to Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Guangdong, there are also 8 regions with a total output value exceeding 500 billion yuan, including Hubei, Shandong, Sichuan, Fujian, Beijing, Hunan, Anhui, and Henan. The total construction industry output value completed by these 11 provinces and cities accounts for 70.14% of the total construction industry output value in China. From the growth of the total output value of the construction industry in various regions, the total output value of the construction industry in all 24 regions has increased by different degrees compared to the same period last year. (2) The total output value of the construction industry completed by various regions in other provinces

In the first half of 2023, the total output value of the construction industry in Jiangsu, Beijing, and Hubei provinces exceeded 400 billion yuan, with 667.007 billion yuan, 496.27 billion yuan, and 404.651 billion yuan respectively. The total output value completed by these three regions in other provinces accounts for 34.30% of the total output value completed in other provinces. Ten regions, including Fujian, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Guangdong, Hunan, Shandong, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Tianjin, and Henan, have achieved a total construction industry output value of over 150 billion yuan in other provinces. In the first half of 2023, the total output value of the construction industry completed by 17 regions in other provinces increased year-on-year, with Ningxia experiencing the fastest growth, reaching 29.81%. The growth rates in Hainan and Shandong have also exceeded 15%. From the perspective of extroversion (i.e. the proportion of the output value completed by this region in other provinces to the total output value of the construction industry in this region), the top three regions are still Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai, with 73.32%, 69.42%, and 55.80%, respectively. There are also 11 regions with an outward degree exceeding 30%, including Qinghai, Fujian, Hubei, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Hunan, Guizhou, Liaoning, Shanxi, and Hebei (Figure 2).

(3) Number of construction enterprises, number of employees, and labor productivity

In the first half of 2023, there were a total of 11 regions with over 5000 construction enterprises nationwide. Among them, Jiangsu has the largest number of enterprises, reaching 13104. The number of enterprises in Shandong, Zhejiang, and Guangdong all exceeds 10000. Compared to the same period last year, the number of enterprises in 29 regions has increased, with Qinghai's growth rate exceeding 50%, and Tianjin and Hainan's growth rates both exceeding 25%; The number of enterprises in Jilin and Heilongjiang regions has decreased by over 10% (Figure 3).图片8.png

In the first half of 2023, there were still 13 regions in China where the number of construction industry employees exceeded one million. Jiangsu and Zhejiang are still the provinces with the largest number of employees, reaching 6.8497 million and 4.166 million respectively. Fujian, Guangdong, Shandong, Sichuan and other four provinces all have over 2 million employees. Compared with the same period last year, the number of employees in 10 regions has increased, with Jiangsu having the largest increase, with an increase of 378700 people; The number of employees in 18 regions has decreased, with the largest decrease being in Sichuan, with a decrease of 550000 people. The largest increase in the number of employees was in Tibet, with a growth rate of 22.71%; The largest decrease was in Jilin, with a decrease of 21.05% (Figure 4).

(4) The total amount of contracts signed and newly signed by construction enterprises


In the first half of 2023, the total contract value of construction enterprises in seven regions, including Guangdong, Hubei, Jiangsu, Beijing, Zhejiang, Sichuan, and Shanghai, all exceeded 300 billion yuan, reaching 5414.275 billion yuan, 432.05 billion yuan, 3917.644 billion yuan, 3700.0158 billion yuan, 3600.449 billion yuan, 3124.304 billion yuan, and 3014.628 billion yuan, respectively. There are also three regions in Shandong, Hunan, and Fujian with a total contract amount exceeding 200 billion yuan. Qinghai has the fastest year-on-year growth in total contract amount, reaching 32.80%. The growth rates in Hainan, Shaanxi, Shanghai, and Jiangxi all exceeded 15%. The total contract amount in 9 regions showed negative growth, with Guangxi and Inner Mongolia both showing negative growth exceeding 8% (Figure 6).

In the first half of 2023, the new contract amounts signed by construction enterprises in Jiangsu, Guangdong, Hubei, and Zhejiang provinces all exceeded 1 billion yuan, reaching 1397.412 billion yuan, 1388.298 billion yuan, 1296.471 billion yuan, and 1073.151 billion yuan, respectively. Eight regions including Shandong, Sichuan, Beijing, Fujian, Shaanxi, Shanghai, Hunan, and Anhui have signed new contracts worth over 600 billion yuan. Qinghai has the fastest year-on-year growth in the amount of newly signed contracts, reaching 91.68%. The growth rates in Tibet, Hainan, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Jilin, Hubei, Shanghai, Inner Mongolia, Shandong, and Jiangsu all exceeded 10%. The newly signed contracts in 12 regions showed negative growth, with Guangxi, Henan, and Xinjiang all experiencing negative growth exceeding 15% (Figure 7).

(5) Construction area and completed area of the building

In the first half of 2023, the construction area of houses by construction enterprises in Jiangsu and Zhejiang exceeded 1 billion square meters, reaching 1.99 billion square meters and 1.427 billion square meters respectively. There are eight other regions with a construction area of over 500 million square meters, including Guangdong, Beijing, Shandong, Fujian, Hubei, Hunan, Shanghai, and Henan. The fastest year-on-year growth in housing construction area was in Xinjiang, reaching 19.10%, while the growth rates in Hunan and Hainan also exceeded 10%. The construction area of houses in 21 regions showed negative growth, with Tibet experiencing a negative growth rate of over 65%, while Qinghai, Liaoning, Guangxi, and Sichuan all experienced a negative growth rate of over 10% (Figure 8).

In the first half of 2023, the completed housing area of construction enterprises in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Hubei exceeded 100 million square meters, reaching 249 million square meters, 193 million square meters, and 111 million square meters respectively. Seven other regions, including Hunan, Guangdong, Shandong, Fujian, Sichuan, Jiangxi, and Henan, have completed over 50 million square meters of housing construction. The growth rate of completed housing area in Hainan, Jilin, and Xinjiang has all exceeded 50%, while the growth rate in Shanghai, Liaoning, and Inner Mongolia has also exceeded 20%. The completed area of housing construction in 14 regions showed negative growth, with negative growth exceeding 25% in Guizhou, Henan, Tibet, and Sichuan (Figure 9).
